Chika Unigwe
WAO!!! I have watched with keen interest the recent winning of millions by Nigerian young women including an eight year old girl. The first was Chika Unigwe who is the author on everyone’s lips. The Belgium based, Nigerian born author recently won the LNG Nigeria Prize for Literature for her novel: On Black Sisters street, which portrayed the lives of Nigerian prostitutes living abroad. The prize is a whooping $100,000 and in a recent interview with the vanguard she confessed:
"What will you do with the $100,000 prize money?

I have absolutely no idea."
HER INTERVIEW WITH VANGUARD LEARNING IS REPRODUCED BELOW:
In this short interview with Vanguard Learning, Unigwe tells her own story to inspire writers, readers and learners alike. She then tops it all up with the answer to a $100,000 question.
What inspired On Black Sisters Street?
I was very curious about the lives of Nigerian prostitutes in Belgium. I wanted to know why anyone would come so far to work in the sex industry.
Tell us about your stay in Belgium?

I have lived here for about 15 years now.  I learnt to speak and write in Dutch here, and I also took a few language lessons
Dutch is sometimes used as a synonym for something that is difficult to understand, how easy is it for you to write in Dutch?
It’s not easy, it’s my third language, but I like challenges.
Do you prefer writing in Dutch or in English?
It depends on what I am writing. English is certainly the handier language of the two for me.
How long have you been writing, and what inspired your writing career?
I always wanted to be a writer, but I have only done it professionally now for about six years.
What writers have influenced you the most?
My first influence was probably Flora Nwapa. I love Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s magical realism; I love the expansiveness of Tolstoy’s language. I love the way Bernardine Evaristo reimagines history and I love Alice Munro’s prose.
What was it like winning the Nigeria prize for literature?
It still seems surreal. I am delighted, naturally, but I am also humbled by the honour.
What challenges have you faced as a writer?
Finding time, and being patient.
What’s your advice to young writers?
Persist. Keep reading. Keep writing.
What’s next for Chika Unigwe?
More books.
What will you do with the $100,000 prize money?
I have absolutely no idea.Vanguard

Ebube Essien-Garrick
Then came Ebube Essien-Garricks who out of no where claimed the prize for the much talked about MTN ultimate wonder win an aeroplane promo. The young woman then told the punch in an interview:“People are calling to ask my parents if I am married, some others are giving them promises. Even on the Internet, I don’t have a Facebook account but someone has opened one in my name. If anyone is coming because of my money, I promise the person that he will not get a dime because I will make sure he doesn’t.” - 27 year old Gladys Ebube The young Lady had to switch off her phone

Amarachi the 8 yr millionaire
And if you think The ladies are done, then you are wrong. This 8 year old beat all ten finalists that made it after screening that took airtel crew all through Nigeria, in the Nigeria got talent show. After a keenly contested competition, she emerged the winner of N10,000,000. Actually, to be frank with you, I have been proud of this girl from the start of the competition and followed her closely. ironically, she seems to be the only one with a clear plan for her money!!!

Read her interview with Ynaija here:
Congratulations on winning the ‘Nigeria’s Got Talent’ reality show, how does it feel coming out tops in the competition?
Amarachi: I give God the glory, I feel so happy.

As an 8-year-old, how did you feel seeing other competitors, did you feel intimidated?
Amarachi: I did not feel intimidated because God is by my side.

What do you hope to do with the prize money you received as winner of the NGT show?
Amarachi: I will use part of the money to help the orphanage and the needy and I will use another part of the money for my education and my siblings education.

Why an orphanage? Do you any particular orphanage in mind?
Amarachi: Because I always feel sad when I see people suffering.

What would you love to study abroad?
Amarachi: I want to study medicine because I love helping people.

The audience loved your dance moves during the competition, how long do you practise to get it right? Does your mother help with that?
Amarachi: Just a few hours a day. Yes, she does, very well.

Would you continue dancing or consider doing something else in future?
Amarachi: I want to be a medical doctor. I love dancing, dancing is in me.
