YOU AND YOUR DRUGS: THE EFFECTS OF FOOD ON DRUGS AND SIDE EFFECTS

The effects of food on drugs and drug side effects cannot be over emphasized. Drugs or medicines are natural or synthetic agents or chemicals used for the treatment, cure, prevention or diagnosis of a medical condition or disease. For drugs to work effectively, they have to be absorbed properly from the site of administration. Drugs can be administered through oral (through the mouth) or parenteral (through injection in the muscles or the veins) routes. Other routes for drug administration are dermal (skin), anal (anus) e.t.c.
Absorption of drugs from the stomach can be significantly affected by the presence or absence of food in the stomach. Food or other materials present in the stomach can cause an increase or decrease the rate of absorption of medicines. This can in turn accelerate, or delay the onset of the effect of the drug. Because of the effect of the presence of food in the stomach on the absorption, onset of action and side effects of some drugs, the Pharmacist normally gives out very useful instructions to clients at the point of dispensing drugs. Patients/clients are usually clearly advised as to when to take their drugs or medications in relation to meal times.

The benefits of taking certain drugs with or after food include
·    reduced side effects of the drugs (e.g. less stomach discomfort from some anti-inflammatory pains killers when taken after meals)
·    enhancing the drugs effects and actions because of enhanced absorption
On the other hand taking certain drugs without food can lead to harmful effect which include
·    increased frequency and severity of side effects
·    decreased or delayed effects and actions of drugs
Because of their different properties, the Pharmacist may also advise that certain drugs be taken on an empty stomach or away from meals so as to enhance their effect and safety.
It is therefore very important that patients listen to and adhere strictly to the instructions or orders given by the pharmacist at the time of dispensing drugs. This will prevent unwanted and harmful effects from medications. It will also ensure that you get maximum benefits of using the drugs in the right dose and at the right times.
Always remember that some drugs should be taken after food or with meals while others should be taken on an empty stomach.
Therefore whenever you ARE in doubts please ensure you always ASK YOUR PHARMACIST or DOCTOR. I beleive you can now understand the effects of food on drugs and side effects and the reason for drug instructions given by your pharmacist in relation to food.
