800,000 APPLIED FOR 1,500 INEC JOBS – Jega

800,000 applied for 1,500 INEC jobs – Jega

The level of unemployment in this country keeps on soaring everyday as more and more graduates receive (I deliberately avoided using 'earn' ) their degrees and diplomas only to join the unemployment queue. This is why i remember at a seminar i attended some time ago, the speaker said that graduates are so eager to write job tests that they will ask two women discussing about pregnancy test the venue of the test! The report by Professor Jega about the number of applicants for the INEC jobs advertised is a testimony to this fact.

The Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, on Thursday said 800,000 people applied for the 1,500 vacancies in the commission.
Jega, who made this known during an African Independent Television programme, denied an allegation that the commission had secretly recruited people to fill the posts which he said were well advertised in national newspapers.
The INEC chairman also flayed de-registered political parties which accused the commission of acting a script written by the Peoples Democratic Party.
He said the allegation was not only uncharitable, but also insulting to him and other commissioners in INEC.
Explaining the commission’s ongoing recruitment exercise, he said the commission was fair and acted according to the law.
According to him, apart from advertising in several newspapers, the advertisements were posted in state and local government electoral offices.
The INEC chairman also faulted the political parties that said the deregistration of political parties was to pave the way for a one-party system, with the PDP being the only party in the country.
Jega insisted that the de-registration of the political parties complied with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act 2010 as amended.
He stated, “It (the allegation) is laughable. It is uncharitable to us. It is an insult to many of us that people can think that those of that have been entrusted with this national responsibility can pander to anybody’s wish.”

Planning for the holidays is a busy and joyful time. But all of the decorations, extra electrical cords and the parade of people going in and out of your home calls for more safety precautions to help you make this holiday season safe and happy for you and your family.
Here's a checklist for the home holiday safety:
·
    • Ask a friend or neighbor to watch your house if you plan to spend the holidays away from home.
    • If you display a live Christmas tree or live greenery, select the freshest possible. A moist tree is less likely to catch fire.
    • Place trees a safe distance from vents and any heat source that may dry the tree. Inspect the tree for dryness daily.
    • Inspect all holiday light wiring. Defective, worn or frayed electrical wiring should be thrown away. Also, be sure to use fixtures specifically designed for outdoor use if you decorate your house, trees or yard.
    • Use no more than three light sets on any one extension cord. Also, don't run electrical cords under rugs. Be sure all lights are turned off before you go to bed or leave the house.
    • Place candles and other open flames away from decorations. Never leave burning candles unattended and always supervise children when burning candles.
    • Keep a fire extinguisher near your Christmas tree.  Make sure your family has a fire emergency escape plan.  In case of fire, leave your home and call for help from a neighbor's home.
    • When buying artificial decorations, check for "flameproof" or "fire retardant" qualities.

SECURITY ADVISORY – SECURITY IN THE YULETIDE SEASON
GENERAL
There is an upsurge in criminal activities and other violent crimes during this yuletide season, particularly organized/conspiratorial crimes such as kidnap for ransom and armed robbery attacks in major cities and along highways traversing the country. In recent times, the trend indicates that the perpetrators of kidnap for ransom incidents have become daring and violent in the kidnap prone states in the south-south and south east geo-political zones, especially Delta, Edo, Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Abia, Akwa Ibom States amongst others.

As we approach the Christmas and New Year festive periods, it is imperative that personnel and their families remain mindful of the prevalent threats of kidnap for ransom and armed robbery. All should consider taking appropriate precautionary measures towards reducing your level of exposure, particularly those travelling to their home towns.

Please be guided by the following tips:

I.   Personal Security

-   Keep a low profile, blend in and be alert of developments in your environment
-   Avoid known crime prone areas/hot spots in your home towns/states
-        Avoid routine pattern of movements and late night outings
-        Avoid undue exposure, inclusive of your family members

II. Financial Transactions

-   Keep all information concerning financial transactions strictly confidential – don’t discuss in the open
-   Avoid carrying large sums in cash, do not carry black polythene or brown envelopes, they may attract criminals.
-   Avoid physical transactions that require large sums in cash - use cheques and electronic money transfers
-         Use ATMs only in safe and well lit places

III. Travel Security

-         Always pre-plan your journey and ensure the vehicle is in good working condition
-         Discuss travel details only with immediate family members
-         Avoid night driving, and make less use of your high value cars that easily mark you out as a potential target
-         Stick to major routes and avoid lonely routes with bad roads and poor visibility
-         Don’t give ride to strangers, including persons dressed in uniforms, as they may be criminals in disguise
-         Beware of techniques used by criminals to force unsuspecting victims to stop

It is also established that motorists are most vulnerable when:

-  Waiting for the gates to be opened for them at residences
-  Driving through a terribly bad spot that requires slowing down completely with little chance of escape or
when parked on a spot along less-busy-roads without alighting from the car

IV. Social Outings

-         Always let close family members be aware of your movements
-         Avoid late outings unless it is absolutely necessary (even then ensure you are accompanied)
-         Avoid crowded places
-         Always take your mobile phone with you, in the event you need to make emergency calls

However, in the likely event of an attack or incident, please remember the following:

-    The general rule is "NEVER" attempt to run
-    DO NOT resist or panic, just stay calm and cooperate
-    AVOID eye-to-eye contact with the assailants, but respond to instructions and questions calmly.
-    Don't make sudden movements without first seeking their permission - e.g. unfastening your seat belt as they may
 misconstrue your intention
-    Implore them not to use their weapons as you will cooperate fully
-    Focus your energy on survival, maintaining self respect and dignity
-    Inform them if you have any medical condition
-    Request to speak with your relatives, close associates, and give them the facts unemotionally
-    Don't attempt to call the Police when it is not safe to do so
-    Report to the nearest police station and company security control room when it is safe to do so.
